On April 28, I board VIA Rail Canada to start a year-long trip around the world. During my travels, I’ll continue writing my monthly “Earth Matters” column, but with a broader perspective. I’ll focus on stories that highlight positive changes that people are making around the globe to help the environment. The aim is to make these stories interesting and relevant to readers back in Santa Cruz.
In 2014, the statewide drought continued as the biggest environmental news story in Santa Cruz County. Below I list some milestones of environmental change affecting our region during the past year:
I moved to Santa Cruz County in 1986 to follow an old dream...moving to the country. Songs like Jesse Colin Young’s “Ridgetop” and Neil Young’s “Are you ready for the country?” inspired me to search for that rural domicile within commuting distance of my workplace. Sound familiar? What could be better than living in the mountains near the beach in sunny California, surrounded by towering redwoods?
Not driving solo to work ... we've all heard about it, and maybe considered it, but increasing numbers of folks are actually doing it.
For a few devotees like Detlef Adam, Bike-to-Work Day is every day. For nine years, Adam, an electrician with the San Lorenzo Valley Water District, has commuted on his bicycle from his home in Santa Cruz to his job in Boulder Creek.
